A CDC Update On Influenza
From the APIC.org:
“The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued new guidance on September 16 for preventing flu in healthcare settings. The new 17-page guide, which replaces previous CDC guidance for both seasonal influenza and the Interim Guidance on Infection Control Measures for 2009 H1N1 Influenza in Healthcare Settings, recommends the use of surgical masks rather than N-95 respirators when providing routine care for flu patients. Access the new CDC guidelines. “

What’s Really On Your Keyboard?
There was a great article from our friends at iKey today in regards to keyboard sanitation.

WETKEYS makes waterproof and washable keyboards to fight this threat. We have wireless keyboards, flexible keyboards and more. So stop by WETKEYS.com today to get yours!
Some WHO Recommendations
The WHO has some recommendations for the post-pandemic world.
A main point is to continue being hygienic – get vaccinations if you are a high-risk for disease individual.
Washing your hands regularly is also important. But so is washing your keyboard.

“The SEAL TOUCH GLOW 2™ has been created to help reduce the risk of worldwide cross contaminations, including H1N1, Norovirus and the “superbug,” MRSA. Dr. Charles Gerba, University of Arizona, tested numerous common touch surfaces and found keyboards to be a major bacteria harbor with 400 times more bacteria than the average toilet. Unlike any other keyboards, the Seal Shield™ SEAL TOUCH GLOW 2™ combines Seal Shield™ waterproof technology and SILVER SEAL™ technology for antimicrobial protection of the product, making it dishwasher safe and resistant to mold, mildew and odor causing bacteria. “

“Hospital Acquired Infections” changing to “Healthcare Associated Infections”
This was written by the Lexington Herald Leader today regarding the name change of HAIs:
...What's more, HAIs (hospital acquired infections) are common enough in all health-care settings, not just hospitals, to warrant a name change. They are now recognized by the Centers for Disease Control as "health care associated infections." The name change may seem innocuous, or perhaps a bit defensive on the part of hospitals sensitive to public relations. But on a deeper level, it's disturbing that rather than defeat the infection threat, we've renamed it to capture its expanding footprint.

It is imperative that you urge hospitals to reduce the amount of healthcare associated infections. A product like the one we produce can do just that. Our keyboards and mice can be disinfected between users and vastly reduce that amount of cross-containmenation.

Infection Preventionist Survey Results
The Cintas Corporation released the results of a survey it conducted on infection preventionists.
Here is a segment of the article:
CINCINNATI, Aug 25, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Cintas Corporation /quotes/comstock/15*!ctas/quotes/nls/ctas (CTAS 25.58, +0.38, +1.51%) today announced the results of an attendee survey conducted at the recent APIC 2010 conference. The survey was designed to better understand the relationship between infection prevention department and environmental services (EVS) in controlling hospital-acquired infections. The survey was completed by 100 infection control personnel.
Results showed that 79 percent of respondents indicated they work closely with the EVS department to establish cleaning protocols and ensure compliance. An additional 73 percent of respondents advised they were also involved in the selection of the cleaning products used within their facility.
“Infection preventionists play a pivotal role in limiting the spread of bacteria and viruses in a healthcare environment,” said Brent Shafer, VP Healthcare at Cintas. “By working closely with the EVS department, they can be a proponent for EVS to gain additional financial resources. This helps to improve overall levels of cleanliness, reducing cross contamination and infection.”

When Hospitals Admit Errors…
Liability costs go down. At least, according to This Study by the University of Michigan Health System.
The Wall St. Journal reported this article yesterday and it has some interesting facts. Even though the hospital would admit and compensate for mistakes, lawsuits declined and overall liability costs did too.
The healthcare system can lower its costs even further by implementing WETKEYS washable keyboards and mice.
All of our medical grade equipment is waterproof and can be cleaned between users. This helps prevent hospital spread infections. When you lower unneccessary infections, you lower the overall cost of healthcare.
