The Cost Of Medical Errors
The Wall St. Journal wrote a piece on the cost of medical errors today.
“Medical errors and the problems they can cause — including bed sores, post-op infections and implant or device complications — cost the U.S. economy $19.5 billion in 2008, according to a study released today. (That’s enough to buy almost 1.3 billion copies of The Checklist Manifesto, Atul Gawande’s bestseller on reducing such errors via the lowly checklist.)
The study, commissioned by the Society of Actuaries and carried out by the actuarial and consulting firm Milliman, is based on insurance claims data. The cost estimate includes medical costs, costs associated with increased mortality rate and lost productivity, and covers what the authors describe as a conservative estimate of 1.5 million measurable errors. The report estimates the errors caused more than 2,500 avoidable deaths and over 10 million lost days of work.”

MRSA Cases Are On The Decline
Bloomberg News has reported that MRSA cases are on the decline in the US.
“Invasive MRSA, a hospital-acquired infection that kills at least 15,000 people annually in the U.S., may be in retreat as health providers strengthen practices to control its spread.
The rate at which patients contracted this drug-resistant germ, one of the most common causes of infections in hospitals, dropped 28 percent from 2005 through 2008 in nine metropolitan areas across the U.S., according to a study published today in the Journal of the American Medical Association. There was also a 17 percent decline in health-care-associated outbreaks that occur outside hospitals, said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which collected and analyzed the data.”

Stay Safe While Living a Healthy Lifestyle
Hello fans! Hopefully you are all enjoying the week.
WETKEYS wanted to make all of us healthy lifestyle goers aware of a potentially dangerous everyday situation.
The New York Times wrote an article on skin infections that can occur at the gym. Below is a portion of it:
When you go to the gym, do you wash your hands before and after using the equipment? Bring your own regularly cleaned mat for floor exercises? Shower with antibacterial soap and put on clean clothes immediately after your workout? Use only your own towels, razors, bar soap, water bottles?
If you answered “no” to any of the above, you could wind up with one of the many skin infections that can spread like wildfire in athletic settings. To read the entire article, click Here

News For Travelers
The USA Today posted this earlier:
“Federal health officers logged more than 3,000 cases of potentially infectious diseases among travelers in the past year, including airline passengers with tuberculosis, whooping cough, measles, mumps and typhoid fever, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data obtained by USA TODAY.
The reported cases, a fraction of illnesses carried by travelers, show the importance of up-to-date vaccinations and getting medical advice before going abroad, says Nina Marano, chief of the CDC’s quarantine branch.”
